COMMUNITY ISSUES / TRAFFIC & ACCESS

Keep our roads moving.

Consider how future land use could affect nearby roads and trail users.

Local roads · Trail crossings · Neighborhood access

Why it matters

Residents want the limited access between Jetta Point and SR 434 considered before any more intensive use of the land. Traffic questions include turning movements, vehicle volume, and the safety of people walking or cycling near the trail. We object to any destruction of the Black Hammock Trailhead or traffic incursion into the Watermark property with its vulnerable population.

A useful review would assess proposed entrances, effects on nearby roads, and conflicts with trail users. No completed traffic study or predicted crash increase has been presented since the 2006 sports complex idea, and significant changes have occurred since then. First, the Watermark was built 2016-2018, blocking the previous planned path from Vistawilla. Also, general traffic on SR 434 has increased over the years.

Although corporate developers are ultimately responsible for traffic flow design, it should be noted that the Jetta Point property frontage on SR 434 is a mere 300 feet or so and already includes a turn lane for the FL 417 ramp. Cities and counties may, in fact, be held responsible for approval of systemic design flaws and for dangerous traffic conditions. We’d rather just prevent terrible snarls and accidents.
